Holidays are a part of remembering to take time out from the everyday. Whether flying to the other side of the world or planning a staycation here are three top escapes for 2017:
For another world altogether: Providencia
The tiny Caribbean island that's part of Colombia may take four flights and days to get to, but it's a slice of paradise. Come for the low-key barbecue beach shacks and sparkling sea. Stay for the horizontal laid-back vibe and complete lack of signal.
For the European escape you've never heard of: Comporta
Just an hour’s drive from Lisbon this village on Portugal’s west coast has a blustery barefoot feel. Spot nesting storks and flamingoes in the river and surf the Atlantic by day. There’s not much in the way of hotels which is why this spot is still a relative secret – rent a house and keep it to yourself.
For the middle of nowhere a little closer to home: North Uist
The 200 islands that make up the Outer Hebrides used to be one single landmass. On the right day in August the white sands of North Uist could be mistaken for New South Wales, but the bone-chillingly bracing waters will bring you crashing back to reality all year round. This getaway is about warm coats, windy walks and plenty of smoked salmon sandwiches.
