Cocktail bars in New York range from the Wall Street chic and modern to the wood-panelled, gin-soaked hideaways in the East Village, steeped in the history of prohibition.
One of our favourite bars is Las Esquinas in the heart of Soho. As you enter what seems like a takeaway taco restaurant, nod to the bouncer and he’ll take you down through the hot and sticky kitchen where you emerge into a dimly-lit cocktail bar serving an array of margaritas and sophisticated Mexican snacks. But for those who can’t make it to NYC itself, here's a recipe to rustle up a Christmas cracker of a Manhattan this December.
2 parts whiskey
1 part sweet vermouth
1 to 2 dashes bitters, such as Angostura
Place ice in a cocktail shaker.
Add the whiskey, vermouth and bitters.
Rub the orange peel around the rim of the cocktail glass.
Strain the drink into the glass.
Add a cherry or two and voila!
