Georgiana Huddart, Founder Hunza G

As a woman who usually buys a size 12 I was alarmed at the concept of a one-size-fits-all swimsuit, even more so when a miniscule parcel arrived to reveal a duckling-coloured cossie the size of a babygrow. And yet, miraculously, this very item is now my favourite thing to wear on the beach. Made on a loom, the iconic ‘crinkle’ fabric has no seams, so stretches to flatter your natural body shape. Combine this with an 80s cut and colours that are made for sunshine, and you can’t help but feel good, or as Georgiana describes it, ‘a bit naff in a great way.’

The cult brand originated as the fashion label, Hunza, launched by Peter Meadows back in 1984. As today it was steeped in celebrity – think Julia Roberts’ hooker dress in Pretty Woman – but was dispanded at the end of the decade when fashions changed. By chance a Hunza dress wound up in the Huddart family dressing up box and Georgiana’s love for the crinkle was born.

On a trip to Berlin for her 21st birthday her then-boyfriend bought her a skirt in the fabric in a vintage shop. It looked good, and she began seeking it out in charity shops and even making her own clothes from samples of the seersucker-lycra material. Fortune’s favour intervened when a friend introduced her to Peter in 2014 and the pair relaunched the label for the modern day as Hunza G.

When we meet in New York Georgiana is in between meetings with Saks and Opening Ceremony, and later this month the brand is launching on net-a-porter. It’s fair to say she’s busy. So how does it feel to run this skyrocketing business? ‘Amazing but relentless and constantly stressful too.’

Despite the stress, her passion for the fabric and energy for the brand is effusive. Collaborations with Henry Holland and Pandora Sykes have brought a mass of followers. The swimsuits have been seen on everyone from Lady Gaga to Georgia May Jagger. So what’s next for Hunza G? ‘We’re developing a new fabric, a more grown up crinkle with a finer knit.’ Watch this space.

Perfect summer holiday? Something based around a wedding in Europe with masses of friends, tagging on a few days to explore local villages.

Best beach? Eating giant prawns on Cala Xuclar in Ibiza.

What's your summer song? I tend to listen to a lot of old music - lately I'm into Sam Cooke.
Who’s the Hunza G woman? She’s someone quite confident who doesn’t take life too seriously. Sporty and not too precious about things.
